# Yes, The 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade is a Head Turner! *By Dave Taylor, menwhoblog.com — Updated March 2026* Written by: [Dave Taylor](https://menwhoblog.com/dave-taylor.html) Last Updated: 22 March 2026 New!Hits: 10Reading time: 06:26 The Toyota Camry has been a popular sedan since it was first released back in 1982, and by the late 1990s was the best-selling car in the United States. In 2007, the Camry Hybrid became one of the very first hybrid sedans in the market, but by the early 2010s, the design was being criticized as too staid and conservative. Toyota delivered a refresh for 2015 that helped, but it was the switch to the TNGA platform in 2018 that really changed it from "your parents' car" to a lower, wider, and sportier vehicle. 2020 added the Toyota Racing Division (TRD) performance variant, and 2025 marked the switch to an all-hybrid lineup for the now surprisingly sporty Camry. The big addition for the [2026 Toyota Camry](https://www.toyota.com/camry/) was cosmetic: The [Nightshade](https://www.toyota.com/nightshade/) variant offers everything that's in the SE trim, plus blackout elements: A blacked-out grille, mirrors, badging, spoilers, 19-inch black wheels, and a dark styling theme. Nightshade's a popular option, also available for the Corolla, 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, Tundra, Sienna, Prius, and Tacoma. Needless to say, when I had the chance to spend a week behind the wheel of the [**2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade**](https://www.toyota.com/camry/) in a cheery Supersonic Red, I didn't hesitate. Here's what Toyota dropped off: Quite the sporting look for what historically has been a placid family sedan, it garnered more than one admiring look and "nice car, dude" from strangers. This angle also highlights the many blackout elements in this variant, from the front grille to the emblem to the wheels and side-view mirrors. The slim headlight design was also a win, projecting an aggressive nighttime appearance to other drivers. The interior also featured a big infotainment screen and a design that leans on some classic Toyota touches - like that great in-line shifter - along with newer elements like the climate control center and especially the main gauge cluster behind the steering wheel. Note also the SE sport pedals; a fun addition that offers a reminder that this is a "sport" version of the Camry (yes, quotes intentional). There are attractive white accents on the faux leather seats (you can just barely see it above), but the dash is uniformly black with the Nightshade edition. A few subtle touches that matched the exterior color would be a great upgrade to this functional and reasonably modern dash design. The steering wheel controls were big and easy to manage, a benefit of having a larger central area on the steering wheel than many modern vehicles. Navigating through display options and managing the infotainment system were both straightforward with the various controls, from volume and channel to cruise control. The [Camry](https://www.toyota.com/camry/) features Toyota's excellent [Safety Sense 3.0](https://www.toyota.com/safety-sense/) tech package that adds pre-collision braking, lane tracing assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Adaptive Cruise Control is nice on long highway drives, but it's in heavy traffic that its ability to slow the car down to a full stop, then resume to keep up with traffic is a big win. Add lane tracing assist, and you can zone out for a few moments in bumper-to-bumper traffic without any adverse consequences. (of course, if you're that tired, pulling over for a catnap is always the smart move) The feel of the gearshift is great, a truly classic sports car element, paired with handy drive mode access buttons for Eco, Normal, and Sport. Speaking of which, the hybrid has a wonderful 46 mpg estimated fuel efficiency from the EPA, and I saw just a bit below that at 45.1 mpg. With gas at its highest price in recent years, fuel efficiency was greatly appreciated. As hybrid car drivers know, adding a hybrid can make a vehicle more peppy and responsive, improving the overall drive experience. The [2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade](https://www.toyota.com/camry/) lived up to this with a nice jump to speed from a stop and plenty of torque for quick maneuvers on the highway. It also handled mountain driving in the nearby Rocky Mountains with aplomb, never leaving me feeling that I needed to change into the right lane to let faster drivers pass me on the uphills. Behind the gearshift is an excellent charging and power area with one of the most reliable Qi wireless charging spots I've used in quite a while. However I placed my [iPhone 17 Pro](http://www.apple.com/iphone), with or without a MagSafe case, it charged reliably. By comparison, the [2026 Prius Nightshade](https://www.toyota.com/prius/) edition's drop-in slot wireless charger *never* worked with the same phone. Note also the generous allotment of two USB-C and a USB-A port for maximum flexibility. This bright, easily understood instrument cluster design was introduced with the 2025 redesign and it's great. Everything's visible, but with this simple, less cluttered layout, key information can be gleaned at a glance. In this instance, notice that the current speed limit is shown in red (35 mph) because our current rate of travel is 38 mph. More interesting to see here is that it's estimating a range of 310 miles with 3/4 of a tank. This is surprising since the car has a rated range of 600 miles [13.2 gallons x 46 mpg], but it's likely due to this vehicle being so new that the computer's still calculating optimal range. I see the same thing with my brand new 2026 Mazda CX-50 hybrid, where it has a full range of 535 miles [14.5 gallon tank x 38 mpg], but my half-empty tank is so far giving me an estimated range much lower than the math suggests. The 12.3-inch infotainment display screen is a great feature, much larger than would be expected for a car at this price point (under $40K). It worked beautifully with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Below it, you can see the sleek, redesigned climate controls and slim air vents. While the Camry is a family sedan, I found that the rear legroom was less than I expected... This is with the driver's seat moved forward; when I had it moved back to accommodate my taller 6'2" frame, there was barely enough space to slide in a briefcase or computer bag. How do families manage with kids in the back seat, or do they just get used to having minimal leg room until they can get promoted to the front seat of the vehicle as teens? With my youngest 21 years old, it's been a while since she had to sit in the back seat. One unexpected benefit of a classic sedan design is that there's plenty of trunk space. The rear seats can also fold down, allowing longer items like skis to be pushed into the passenger area as needed. Given the relative lack of legroom, however, a variation with less trunk space and more passenger space would be appreciated (but then you'd have to move the rear wheels back, which would change the dimensions of the car). Truth be told, I was sad to return the Camry to Toyota after my week of driving. It's an unexpectedly sleek, sporty, and attractive sedan at a good price point for younger couples and families. It holds its own and offers a more exciting drive experience than the endless compact SUVs, including the Toyota RAV4, with the Nightshade exterior changes a must-choose option. The combination of these improvements and Toyota's excellent Safety Sense 3.0 should keep the Camry a solid option for many years to come. **[2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade AWD](https://www.toyota.com/camry/), powered by a 2.5L 4-cylinder 5th gen hybrid system and continuously variable transmission with paddle shifters.
