Florida's Space Coast - Rockets, Surf Lessons And The Beach
Florida's Space Coast stretches 72 miles along the Atlantic, about 30 minutes from Orlando International Airport, and it's the rare trip where the kids and the dad are equally excited about the main event. Give the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex a full day for the Space Shuttle Atlantis, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and the rocket displays, then check the launch schedule before you book. Launches are frequent enough here that a weekend trip has a real chance of catching one from the coast, and a night launch can be seen for miles along the coast.
Day two belongs to the beach. Cocoa Beach runs surfing lessons for first-timers, and the flagship Ron Jon Surf Shop is a classic stop. Fall keeps the Atlantic warm enough for swimming and surfing well into October, and the destination's Fall is for Foodies program usually runs through the fall with prix fixe menus, which helps when you're feeding a family of four. Vincennes, Indiana - Reenactments, Muskets And A WWII Trench
Vincennes, on the Wabash River in southwestern Indiana, stages five war reenactments a year, and September and October are the best months to catch the history in motion. At George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, rangers tell the story of the Revolutionary War's Battle of Fort Sackville, where French fur traders and frontiersmen took on the British army. Ask about the musket demonstration when you arrive.
The nearby Indiana Military Museum has a World War II trench with sound effects and fog, a bombed-out cathedral scene and hundreds of military vehicles and aircraft, and it's handicap accessible, which matters if a grandparent is along. Grouseland, the home of President William Henry Harrison, and the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy round out a second day. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - The Battlefield In Fall Color
Gettysburg National Military Park is at its best in mid to late October, when the fields and ridgelines turn and the summer crowds are gone. Start at the Museum and Visitor Center for the film and the Cyclorama painting so the kids have a picture of what happened, then book a licensed battlefield guide, who rides in your own car for a two-hour tour, which is easier on short attention spans than a bus.

Cody, Wyoming, the Wild West town Buffalo Bill founded in 1896, sits 52 miles from Yellowstone's East Entrance with the Shoshone River running through it. The nightly rodeo is a summer tradition, so a fall trip swaps it for the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, five museums under one roof covering Buffalo Bill, the Plains Indians, Western art, natural history and firearms. Plan on a full morning there; it's the kind of museum where kids pick their own wing.
Mid-September through mid-October is the window the locals recommend: the cottonwoods turn, shoulder-season rates kick in, and a scenic drive up the Wapiti Valley toward Yellowstone is the best chance to hear bull elk bugling. Guest ranches along the river make the best home base for a family, with room to roam, horses on site and a quiet porch for a date night after the kids are asleep. Canmore, Alberta - A Cave Tour And Golden Larches
Canmore is an hour west of Calgary, next door to Banff but without the national park fees or the traffic, and mid-September through October is when the alpine larches turn bright gold. Book an underground trip into Rat's Nest Cave with Canmore Cave Tours for older kids, rent bikes at the Canmore Nordic Centre, and pick a larch hike that fits the shortest legs in the group.

Pigeon Forge And Gatlinburg, Tennessee - Smoky Mountains And Harvest Festival
Great Smoky Mountains National Park charges no entrance fee, though you'll need a parking tag for any stop longer than 15 minutes, and fall color usually reaches the lower elevations from mid-October into early November.
Drive the 11-mile Cades Cove loop early for the best odds of seeing deer and black bears, then spend a day at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge during its Harvest Festival, when the park fills with lit pumpkin displays after dark. Gatlinburg is right at the park entrance and is the easier place to stay with small kids.
Dahlonega, Georgia - Gold-Rush History And Trout Streams
Dahlonega, about an hour north of Atlanta, was the site of one of America's first gold rushes, and the history is still the draw for kids: the Dahlonega Gold Museum is in the old courthouse on the town square, and nearby mines offer tours and gold panning.
A third of the county is Chattahoochee National Forest, with trout streams stocked with rainbows and browns and easy hikes; teenagers can tackle the 150-plus miles of ATV and UTV trails at Iron Mountain Resort. October through early November brings cooler weather and the first changing leaves.
Huntsville, Alabama - A Saturn V And The Home Of Space Camp
If the Space Coast is too far, Huntsville is the other place to see real rockets up close. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center houses a Saturn V moon rocket suspended over the floor of its Davidson Center, along with the Rocket Park outside, and it's the home of Space Camp, which also runs programs for families.
Huntsville is under two hours south of Nashville, close enough to pair with a Tennessee trip.
Indianapolis, Indiana - The World's Largest Children's Museum

Anaheim, California - Halloween Time, Batting Cages And Ducks Hockey
Anaheim in October is Disneyland Resort during Halloween Time, when both parks dress up for the season and the weather still feels like summer. Give it one day, then spend the next on the things that don't need a park ticket: Home Run Park has been an Orange County batting cage since 1961, Camelot Golfland does medieval-themed mini golf, and The Islands Golf Center has a driving range built around a lagoon with floating targets.
Hockey season starts in October, so an Anaheim Ducks game at Honda Center is a good evening for a kid who's never seen live hockey, and baseball fans can tour Angel Stadium. New Hampshire's Mt. Washington Valley sits in the middle of the White Mountains, and late September through mid-October is peak foliage around Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast. The Cog Railway to the summit is the headline for kids: it's the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, running since 1869, and it gets everyone to the top without a single complaint about hiking.
Bretton Woods adds a gondola ride and a canopy tour through the trees, and there are hundreds of hiking trails for the days you want to walk. Book a large vacation rental in Bretton Woods so the kids have space and you have a fire pit. The valley also hosts several Oktoberfests in September and October, and the one at Attitash Mountain Resort usually includes family activities and scenic chairlift rides.
Big Bend, Texas - Desert Trails And Dark Skies
The Big Bend region of West Texas is part of the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, and fall's cooler temperatures make it the best season for hiking the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park and taking in the Rio Grande. Stay in Terlingua, where Ocotillos Village offers A-frames and campsites designed around the night sky, and plan on staying up late at least once.

Cooperstown, New York - The Hall Of Fame Without The Summer Crowds
Cooperstown is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and fall is the smart time to go: the youth tournaments that fill the village in summer are done, the leaves are turning around Otsego Lake, and you can take your time with the plaques.
Add a stop at Doubleday Field, and let each kid pick one player to look up in the museum.
How To Match A Fall Trip To Your Kids' Ages
A canopy tour that turns away a 7-year-old or a battlefield lecture aimed at a teenager can sink a weekend, so size the trip to the youngest person in the car.
Pick Hands-On History For School-Age Kids
Kids between about 7 and 12 are the sweet spot for Vincennes, Gettysburg and Cody, where there's something to touch, hear or watch in motion. Most National Park Service sites, including Gettysburg, George Rogers Clark and Big Bend, offer free Junior Ranger programs, and a badge at the end gives a young kid a reason to pay attention.
Save The Big Adventures For The Teenage Years
The canopy tour in the White Mountains, the ATV trails in Dahlonega and the ghost tours in Gettysburg all have minimum ages, so check them before you promise anything. With toddlers, lean toward places with short walks and plenty of indoor backup, like Huntsville, Indianapolis and the Space Coast.
Book Around The Three-Day Weekend
The long weekend in mid-October, when many schools close for Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day, is the busiest fall weekend at most of these places. Book the room first, then the activities, and consider pulling the kids out on a Friday in late September instead, when rates are lower and the lines are shorter.
Keep One Hour For Yourself
Build one thing for yourself into the plan: a brewery in Cocoa Beach, a round of golf in the White Mountains, a Ducks game in Anaheim. Book it before you leave, the same way you'd book the museum tickets, so it doesn't get dropped when the schedule gets tight.
