The Toyota RAV4 has been around since 1994, arriving in the U.S. for the 1996 model year. At the time, the idea was surprisingly novel: combine the easy driving manners of a car with the cargo space, ground clearance, and upright seating position of an SUV. In fact, RAV4 is an acronym: it [stands for](https://global.toyota/en/detail/7862794) Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-Wheel Drive. Nowadays we’d simply call it a compact crossover but credit where it's due, Toyota helped invent the category.

The [RAV4](https://www.toyota.com/rav4/) now has two bigger crossover siblings in the [Toyota](https://www.toyota.com/) lineup, the Highlander and Grand Highlander, offering a more practical, road-focused alternative to the truck-based 4Runner and Land Cruiser. The little RAV4 has become an enormous success, surpassing the Camry to become Toyota’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S. a decade ago and, more recently, the [best selling vehicle in the world](https://www.racv.com.au/royalauto/transport/cars/top-selling-car-in-the-world-2024.html).

With three decades of development, the RAV4 has gone through a number of major redesigns. The fifth-generation RAV4 debuted as a 2019 model, moving to Toyota’s TNGA-K architecture and adopting a considerably more rugged design. Seven model years later, it was definitely time for an update. 2026 introduces the all-new *sixth-generation* RAV4. Toyota hasn’t abandoned the basic formula, however. Why mess with its most popular vehicle? Instead, the world’s largest automaker has modernized its extraordinarily successful compact SUV while retaining most of the characteristics that made it successful in the first place.

The biggest update is that every sixth-generation RAV4 is now electrified: No more gas-only model. Buyers choose between hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with the AWD regular hybrid now producing 236 horsepower. The chassis remains TNGA-K but gains additional structural reinforcement, revised suspension tuning, and more attention to noise and vibration. Inside, there’s a new digital instrument cluster and dramatically improved Toyota Audio Multimedia system, including a sweet 12.9-inch touchscreen on the Limited. Underpinning the new tech is Toyota’s new Arene software platform, which also enables the new Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 and its expanded driver-assistance technology. It’s more powerful, more efficient, smarter, and considerably more modern. Toyota has changed quite a lot without doing anything reckless like giving the RAV4 an actual personality.

I've driven dozens of Toyota vehicles and owned a number of them over the years too, so I was enthusiastic when the company offered me a [**2026 Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD**](https://www.toyota.com/rav4/) in Storm Cloud to drive for a week. It had so few miles on it that I surmise I'm the second or third journalist in the entire Rocky Mountain Region to get behind the wheel:

This hybrid has the same basic lines of the RAV4 from previous years, but has become a bit boxier in the front. Interestingly, the front grille is almost a mashup of a featureless EV front and a perforated grille for air cooling the engine. In person, it's quite attractive, though the RAV4 is so similar to its many compact SUV brethren that it's a good idea to add a bumper sticker to differentiate your vehicle in parking lots. This model also features the attractive 18-inch alloy wheels.

The 2026 RAV4 Limited combines a naturally aspirated "Dynamic Force" 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with Toyota's long-since-perfected Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission. As a hybrid, there's extra oomph from the electric motors, which gives it a nice drive experience, particularly in Sport mode. It's not a vehicle for late-night street racers, but who would take an SUV to a street race?

Display screens dominate the interior dashboard design of the RAV4, as befits a very modern vehicle. The main instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch screen, while the infotainment system is an enormous 12.9-inch display. At some point are the display screens in a vehicle going to be larger than the view out the windshield?

Design-wise, it's an interesting mix of elements I've seen in other Toyota vehicles - like the steering wheel with all its controls - and entirely new design elements, like the drive control buttons on either side of the dual Qi wireless charging spots just below the climate control vents under the Infotainment screen. The dual charging spots are becoming common in vehicles too, and I have to say I really like it; no fighting over the phone charger, a design that makes it easy to share and, with USB-C ports for rear passengers, enough that everyone can charge up their devices en route.

For a compact vehicle, the center console is pleasantly spacious, with cup holders front and center, a storage spot in front of it, and that dual charging space above that. Compared to the cars I learned to drive back in the day with a bench seat in the front and *no* storage in the dashboard, it's a nice improvement.

The gearshift, however, is an acquired taste. No shifter, not even a stick on the steering column, it's that tiny lever on the center console: shift back for forward, up for reverse, push the button to park. But do you really need more control with a sleek, fully automatic transmission? Still, if we can't have manual transmissions, can we at least have the option of a gear *shift* stick to keep that muscle memory alive? 😎

To the left and right of the charging area, notice the drive mode buttons. On the left, the two buttons are Drive Mode and EV Mode, and the right hosts Trail / Snow and Normal modes. It's not a 4x4, but it does feature electronic on-demand all-wheel drive, which definitely helps when the weather turns nasty.

There's some logic to standardizing steering wheel controls, which Toyota has done with its vehicle lineup. The [RAV4](https://www.toyota.com/rav4/) inherits a pretty standard setup, with the adaptive cruise control and other Safety Sense 4.0 controls on the right side, and the instrument cluster controls and entertainment controls on the left. Easy enough, I found the key cruise control buttons by instinct after having driven so many Toyota vehicles.

Toyota has been making hybrid vehicles for quite a long time and was one of the first major manufacturers to add full battery powered EVs to its lineup, so it's had a lot of time to experiment with what to show on the instrument cluster. The display is a little bit busy, but all the key information's shown, including an interesting fuel efficiency graph front and center.

Overall, you can see that the 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid is delivering as promised, a fantastic 43.9 mpg in real driving conditions, not an EPA testing facility. Indeed, the EPA fuel economy numbers on the vehicle Monroney are 43/37 for city and highway, 41 combined, so unlike most optimized calculations, the 2026 RAV4 Limited *exceeded* EPA numbers. Nice.

The infotainment system display is spacious and utilizes that real estate smartly, with overall vehicle controls on the left, most of the screen consumed by wireless Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto, depending on your device), and climate controls along the bottom of the screen, along with a few physical buttons at the very bottom. In practice, the Arene software platform did a very good job of allowing access to almost every possible feature and setting in a reasonably intuitive manner. And with a 9-speaker JBL sound setup, it sounded really good and was more than ready to help me rock out while on boring stretches of highway.

*However, I will note that the optional heads-up display (HUD) was so bright that I had to turn it off for night driving. I'm sure there's a brightness control somewhere in the settings, but I couldn't find it.*

Climbing out of the driver's seat, the rear passenger area was entirely functional, with decent legroom for teens and adults, space for three along the rear bench, and a few essential charging ports on the back of the center console, perfectly placed for children to charge up their iPads or phones. Notice the vent below the rear seat? That's to help keep the battery under the rear seat cool during driving conditions, one way you can be sure that it really is a hybrid.

The rear cargo space was very good, and with the 60/40 rear seat split, folding it down offered up quite a bit of storage capacity. In fact, it measures up as 37.8 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 70.4 cubic feet with them folded down. You can tow with the [RAV4 Limited Hybrid AWD](https://www.toyota.com/rav4/) too, up to 3,500 pounds. That's rather middle-of-the-road for cargo capacity with vehicles its size, but a strong towing capacity that means you really could tow your teardrop camper, two jet skis on a tandem trailer, or a small recreational boat.

Finally, though, there's a lot to like with the 2026 RAV4 Limited, but what it lacks is pizzazz. It's the SUV you buy your folks so you never have to worry about them being stuck or expensive maintenance bills cropping up. Does it have everything on a buyer's checklist? Absolutely. But few RAV4 owners are going to be giving them names and plastering them with stickers, and that's ultimately what left me almost instantly forgetting all the smart design details and usability customizations; it's yet another SUV in a long parade of vehicles with the same exterior and pretty darn similar interiors. If you're looking for an exciting drive experience and a car that'll turn heads, you're not in the market for a compact SUV anyway, though, so perhaps it's just perfect for what it is: A safe, smart, thoughtful vehicle purchase. There's a reason that over a million of these were sold last year, after all.
