Big Sur - California Pacific Coast Highway

There are so many ways to explore America but all too often we focus on individual destinations and ignore the spaces between the cities. Let's flip the script a bit and check out some road trip routes that will open your eyes and give you a chance to experience the wonders of nature.

According to a 2,000 person survey conducted by market researchers at OnePoll, 54% of respondents had traveled to 10 states or fewer. That may be strange, but what is even more curious is the fact that a majority of respondents did, in fact, show interest in traveling more. A lot of the reasoning as to why those respondents have not traveled yet is because of either a lack of finances, general unpreparedness to travel to an unknown place, or both.

Still, if one were to bring a friend, it may make everything easier. People could split things evenly amongst each other to ensure no one is dropping their life savings on one trip. Additionally, it could be a ton of fun to travel into the unknown with a friend or family member rather than taking on a journey all by yourself. Road trips can actually be a vacation unto itself. Instead of looking for a destination to head to ... try taking driving holidays where you can stretch your imagination and try something new.

But back to the point at hand: road trips are an excellent and enjoyable way to travel across the United States. Below are the top three road trip destinations to take on in the United States:

Michigan's M-22 Scenic Highway

If you are looking for easy driving and sights that you simply can't experience without driving to them. Along this route you'll visit small coastal Lake Michigan fishing villages, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore as well as the wooded hills lining Lake Michigan on the way to the port city of Frankfort. The scenic vistas along this route are legendary. This is a great destination for folks who love craft beer, cider, and wine ... but just make sure to wait till you are done driving for the day!

Chicago to LA on Route 66

Route 66 is no Grand Canyon, but the original highway from Chicago to Los Angeles is a great road to travel on. It may not be the most efficient way to travel, but if you combine the history of the highway with the remarkable towns alongside the route, it really makes for a road trip to be remembered.

Pacific Coast Highway

Starting in San Diego, the route takes in some of the best coastal scenery in California. Visit Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Hearst Castle and follow the iconic Highway One north toward the charming coastal town of Monterey.” That may not sound like the greatest time, but once you get a look at the aforementioned coastal scenery, you will understand why the Pacific Coast Highway is one of the best road trip destinations in the United States.

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

Other routes on this list are known for their scenic views of the water or wide open parts of the United States folks seldom get to explore. This route, from Miami to Key West is a bit different since it runs for 113-miles across dozens of islands and the bridges connecting them. Since the 1950's this route has continued to be improved and what was once a difficult to access part of America is now easily drivable.

Along the way though, you may want to stop at one of dozens of small beaches, seafood shacks, or retro motels where you can soak in some of this unique Florida Keys culture.
