Cabot just announced Cabot Wilds, a 2,500-acre golf resort coming to Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, and the land it sits on belongs to the family that grows more wild blueberries than anyone else on the planet. Preview play starts in summer 2027, with the full opening late that year. That is a long runway, and it is the reason this one belongs on your radar now instead of in two years - if your son is nine today, he turns eleven right around the time the first tee opens.

{poll ["id": 26]}

Most guys book a golf trip six weeks out and then spend the round apologizing for their kid's pace of play. You are not in that position. Here is what to do with the time.

- **Junior clubs fit to height, not age** - a set that fits a nine-year-old will be too short by 2027, so budget for at least one refit between now and the trip.

- **Par-3 and executive courses teach pace better than a full 18** - they cost a fraction of a resort round and nobody behind you is annoyed.

- **Cabot Wilds is being designed to walk**, so a kid who has only ever ridden in a cart is in for a different kind of day. Build the walking habit on your home course first.

- **Nine holes after work beats a full round on Saturday** - attention span gives out long before the swing does, and most municipal courses carry a twilight junior rate that makes a weekly nine survivable on an early-career budget.

- **Two years is enough** to get a kid from "holds the club backwards" to "finishes eighteen without melting down," which is the real difference between a trip that works and one you cut short at the turn.

Cabot already operates seven other golf destinations, and four of them - Cabot Cape Breton, **Cabot Highlands** outside Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, Cabot Saint Lucia and Cabot Citrus Farms - are in our ManTripping roundup of [golf courses worth traveling for](https://www.mantripping.com/travel/golfers-looking-for-something-new-need-to-check-these-golf-courses-out.html). ## The Course Jeff Mingay Is Routing Along the River Philip

Cabot Wilds will open with an 18-hole course and a driving range, designed by Jeff Mingay, a Toronto-based architect who has run his own studio since 2009 and built a reputation on rehabilitating historic layouts rather than bulldozing new ones. That background matters for what he is doing here. The routing follows the existing terrain: rolling highlands, tree-lined valleys, and blueberry fields.

The River Philip is the feature. It runs through the property, and the routing crosses it twice: play goes over the river by footbridge from the fourth tee and crosses back on the eighth hole. Cabot describes the course as having wide playing corridors, natural contours, strategic angles, and expressive greens, and it is being built to be walkable and playable for golfers of different abilities.

Pay attention to that last part if you are bringing a kid or a dad who doesn't play much anymore. Wide corridors and walkable routing separate a course a fourteen-year-old can enjoy from one that punishes him on every tee shot. Like every Cabot property, the course will be enrolled in Audubon International's Platinum Signature Sanctuary certification program - Cabot is the first multi-property golf brand to put every course in its portfolio through it.

## The Bragg Family Has Been Farming This Ground Since 1955

John Bragg picked his first wild blueberry crop at fifteen years old in 1955 and built his first processing plant in 1968. That company is Oxford Frozen Foods, and it is now the largest wild blueberry operation in the world - more than 12,000 acres under cultivation, and somewhere between 40 and 50 percent of the entire global wild blueberry industry running through it. Cabot Wilds is being developed in partnership with Bragg and his family, on land the family has been farming since the 1950s.

"This land has always been a treasured place for my family and it's incredibly meaningful to now share this special part of Nova Scotia with the world," Bragg said in the announcement.

The property sits in Collingwood Corner, about fifteen minutes from the town of Oxford, which carries the title of wild blueberry capital of Canada and has the processing plant to back it up. Cabot CEO Ben Cowan-Dewar called Bragg one of the greatest Canadian entrepreneurs of his generation and a long-time mentor. Whatever you make of announcement-day language, the practical version is that this is not a developer parachuting into a rural county with a site plan. The landowner is the partner.

## Nova Scotia Is Already a Father-Son Trip, Two Years Before the First Tee

Here's what I would act on before 2027. Nova Scotia is one of the best father-son destinations in North America right now, and almost nobody in the US treats it that way.

I drove the Cabot Trail out of Sydney on a Canada and New England cruise a few years ago and it holds up against any coastal drive I have done. It is roughly 185 miles of cliff road around the top of Cape Breton Island, and the whole thing works as a two-day trip with a rental car. Last year I spent some time in Halifax with a buddy as well, but it's been ages since I've had a chance to actually spend some quality time here without having to go back to the ship.

For a dad with limited vacation days and a kid who gets bored in a car, the payoff per hour of driving is hard to beat.

If golf is the point of the trip, Cabot Cape Breton is three hours from the Cabot Wilds site and open today. Cabot Cliffs sits at No. 52 and Cabot Links at No. 79 on GOLF Magazine's 2023-24 Top 100 Courses in the World list, and they are the only two Canadian courses on it. Playing those with your son now, then coming back for Cabot Wilds in 2027, is a better two-trip plan than waiting for the new one and doing it all at once.

Around the Cabot Wilds property itself, the River Philip runs salmon, and the surrounding land carries hiking and biking trails and, in season, blueberry picking you can walk into. In the fall the maple forests and the blueberry fields both turn red. In winter the area opens up to skiing and snowmobile trails. None of that requires a resort to exist.

## Ninety Minutes From Halifax, Three Hours From Cabot Cliffs

Getting there is simpler than most people assume. Halifax Stanfield International Airport is about a ninety-minute drive from the property, and Moncton, New Brunswick is the other option if the fares work out better. Oxford is fifteen minutes away for groceries and gas. Cabot Cape Breton is three hours by car, which makes a combined trip realistic rather than ambitious.

On timing, be precise about what is being promised. Preview play is anticipated for summer 2027. The full opening is late 2027. At that point the property is scheduled to have the 18-hole course, a driving range, a clubhouse with an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar, a recreation pavilion, racquet sports facilities, and wellness and spa facilities. No rates have been announced, and until they are, any budget you build for this is a guess.

## The Lodge Will Be Coming After The Course Opens But There's Are Plenty Of Other Places To Stay Close By

Read Cabot's own fact sheet closely and there is a detail that has not made it into the coverage: the lodge with guest rooms is a future phase. It is not in the opening package. What opens in 2027 is the golf, the clubhouse, the amenities and privately owned cottages - which means the first wave of visitors are either cottage owners, their guests, or people driving in for the day from somewhere else.

Some of these highlights include the Amherst Shore Country Inn sitting on the northern side of the county complete witha  red sand beach and Wild Caraway sitting on the B ay of Fundy.

So if you are planning the father-son version of this trip, the lodging question is the one to solve early. Amherst and Truro are the two nearest towns with "real" hotel inventory but this area has a good diversity of smaller inns and b&b properties that would be great for a father son trip, and it's only 90-minutes away if you will be driving in from Halifax.
